Kung fu Questions
Q: What style of Kung fu is taught?
A: Our school offers the Northern Shaolin style, Southern Shaolin style, and Wing Chun.
Q: What is the difference between the styles?
A: A complete answer can be found here. But the basic answer is this:
The Northern system is flexibility and mobility based and is derived from white crane.
The Southern system is power based and is centered largely around tiger.
Wing Chun is direct, one on one fighting at very close quarters.
Q: Can I train in all three styles?
A: Of course. Many people do this, but it is important to remember that this will slow down your overall progress. Most people choose to focus on one style for a length of time, and then cross train if they still desire to do so.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Uniforms can be ordered through the school, but long black pants, and a black t-shirt is also acceptable. No shorts or light colors. No gi or military uniforms of any kind are allowed.
Q: What about shoes?
A: They are not required, but if you do wear shoes (most students do) they should be martial arts shoes which are cheap and easy to order. Other athletic shoes such as running or basketball shoes simply do not work as well for training. Boots, sandals, etc are not acceptable.
Q: Do you touch hands (spar) ?
A: Yes. Our martial application night is on wednesdays, but no student is ever required to touch hands. It is completely optional, but encouraged for those interested in the martial use Kung fu.
Q: Are classes broken up by age, skill, etc?
A: No. We all train and grow together. Kung fu does not use a belt or ranking system of any kind.
Q: Is there a belt system?
A: No. Similar to the question above, we do not divide by belts or ranks of any kind. All traditional Chinese systems function this way. While it may seem unusual to people who are familiar with the karate (and the like) system it creates a divide that can be harmful to collaborative training.
